NYC EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT ISSUES POTENTIAL RAIN AND THUNDERSTORMS ADVISORY

Notification issued 09-08-2021 at 2:40 PM

The NYC Emergency Management Department advises New Yorkers to prepare for potential rain and thunderstorms this evening into the overnight. The National Weather Service has forecast intermittent light rain from 2PM to 8PM with the highest chance of heavy rain from midnight to 2AM. Total rainfall accumulation for this storm is forecast to be 0.75 of an inch to 1 inch with locally higher amounts of up to 1.25 inch possible. These systems are not forecast to be severe at this time, but please be prepared as conditions may change.

Periods of heavy rain may result in localized minor to moderate urban flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas. City agencies have taken action to clean catch basins and remove street litter in the event heavier rain occurs. Thunderstorms may also create dangerous travel conditions. New Yorkers are advised to limit travel and stay inside during periods of severe weather. If you are outside during a thunderstorm, avoid open areas and try to seek shelter indoors. Seek higher ground during periods of heavy rain.
